When presenting information provide smaller chunks of information, and fewer steps; while using a slower rate of speaking. Rephrase/repeat information when needed, and have your child repeat directions back to you to ensure his/her understanding. Story maps, graphic organizers and other visual cues help increase your child’s understanding of verbally presented information, and information read.
To improve Expressive Language model correct grammatical forms at home and encourage your child to use complete and more complex sentences when speaking. Offer choices. Set up the environment to encourage your child to make requests (e.g., withhold what they want), comment, or express a need to regulate the environment.
